Filter cake

Definition:

Big lumps of fine solids that come from wastewater filtration in industry and in wastewater treatment plants. Filter cake grows in the course of filtration and becomes thicker as particulate matter is being retained. After being removed from the filter and put through a press, filter cake looks relatively solid, even though it still contains some 50% of water.

Filter cake is one of the five waste streams considered in this assessment next to solvents & waste oils, wastewater sludge, paint and ink residues, and fluff.
